Marcello Veneziani, a journalist, offers a different reading than that of Domenico Starnone formulating the teaching of Don Lorenzo Milani the remote causes of the chaos and disorientation of the school in which we live. The following passage is from the book: Overthrow '68 , written by Marcello Veneziani a couple of years ago.
He died a year before the outbreak of the 68, but was an avid precursor. Don Lorenzo Milani sinker was the mystic of the Italian school. The pastor of Barbiana with his celebrated Letter to a teacher, wanted to change radically and generously school, but helped to destroy it. Don Milani deserves the respect due to the idealists in good faith, but all deserve the mistrust that is due to the destructive idealism. Pious intentions, disastrous effects.
All idealists, in good faith, believe to liberate humanity and improve it. Among these Don Milani. That too was a priest, applied the charity, devoted to children with all your heart, acting in the Florence of La Pira, father and father Turoldo Balducci, and died too young. Leaving us the descendants of its beastly damage sublime utopia. Don Milani dreamed of a school is not the rich but of all with the same professor to his students, in dialogue, with no failures no authority, because "Obedience is a virtue." Don Milani outlined the model of the school meeting and even pretended to have written his letter-book with the children, which in reality only absent. Noble intentions, but then came the results. The school that does not reward the merits and abilities, that does not screen and is not founded on the authority of the teacher, less and less prepared for life, does not train, does not improve, does not make students more free and equal but more thugs and bullies. It is a school that has not reduced the gap between rich and poor but has exaggerated. No coincidence that the first 68 most affluent yet sent their children in public schools but now they send them to private.
With their tenacity and their ability had their way, the Latin word for them was not a form of class oppression, as claimed followers of Don Milani, but a lever to free themselves, even half of revenge than the rich, lazy and spoiled, they were not accustomed to the sacrifices. The selection of the best had allowed their social redemption.
The end of the rejection coincided with the end of meritocracy, so it goes on for most of yesterday affiliation, if you have children or protected by the powerful.
The bad school is now beautiful daughter of the ideals of yesterday.
